Only Jimmie Foxx, Lou Gehrig, Rogers Hornsby, Babe Ruth and Ted Williams had better numbers than Martinez in all three triple-slash categories while appearing in at least as many games in their careers, and all of them are in the Hall of Fame. -- Tristan Cockcroft, ESPN.com senior writerYes, hes really a DH more than a third baseman, although he did play more than 500 games there and was moved only because of injuries and not an inability to play the position. Hes going to reach 3,000 hits -- hes already over 2,800 -- and will come close to 500 home runs, a credit to his durability and aging well as he enters his late 30s. In his prime, he was a gifted third baseman, one of the best ever at charging bunts. -- SchoenfieldIf hes elected to the Hall of Fame -- and his candidacy grows exponentially with each passing year -- maybe he finally will allow someone to pat him on the head. On offense, he had the shortest swing, the fastest hands and was one of the best baserunners in baseball history. His 39-game hitting streak for Team Streak in 1987 captured the nations attention. But I know just how good he was at baseballs hot corner -- and you do, too -- because I have seen some pretty good third basemen play the game, and every time one of them makes an incredible play -- every time -- someone who has seen Robinson play says the EXACT same thing: Shades of Brooks Robinson. And theres no way they could all be wrong. -- MullenBrooks Robinson drove in the only run in 10 1-0 victories in his career, a major league record. He is the nicest, unassuming great player ever. After Robinsons retirement, a Baltimore sportswriter said at a banquet, In New York, they named a candy bar after Reggie Jackson. Its odd to say this about a contemporary player, but I feel like hes almost underappreciated. He did win an MVP Award, but he didnt put up some of the same monster numbers as his peers (he hit 40 home runs just once). All he did was hit .300 almost every season, get on base at a high rate and play on our TV screens every October. And ask Mets fans about his clutch ability. Hes right up with George Brett, Wade Boggs and Eddie Mathews in the line behind Mike Schmidt.?-- SchoenfieldIn spending all 19 years of his professional playing career with the Atlanta Braves, Chipper Jones racked up eight All-Star appearances, two Silver Slugger awards and 468 home runs. Jones was also named the National League MVP in 1999, earned the NL batting title in 2008 with an average of .364 and went 14 straight seasons hitting 21 home runs or more. -- Katie Strang, ESPN.com Tigers reporter3. Similar to Mike Schmidt in many ways -- lots of power, lots of walks -- except he wasnt quite the same defensive player.?-- SchoenfieldBefore Hank Aaron, Mathews was the Braves slugger. The only player to play in all three cities where the Braves franchise called home, he hit 40 homers in a season four times in his career, including three straight seasons (1953-55) in which his slash line was .294/.414/.611 with a 1.025 OPS. He averaged 43 HRs, 112 RBIs and 107 walks in that time. Strong. Oh, and another neat nugget -- he was on the cover of the first Sports Illustrated in 1954. -- Peterson2. Im pretty sure settling for a ring more than made up for it. -- KahrlThe term baseball player gets thrown around too often. It shouldnt. Not in a sport that has known George Brett. Need a hit? The MLB All-Star break has arrived, and an array of the games finest have gathered in San Diego for Tuesday nights All-Star Game. It may have evolved into more of an exhibition over the past couple decades, but the game retains a great deal of personal, albeit mostly sentimental, meaning to me. The showdowns of the early 1970s continue to live in my minds eye, as the contemporary matchups will for a new generation of fans.Each game has its own unique cast of characters. Some players are perennials, while others are having their singular moment in the sun thanks to exuberant fan voting, an aberrant first half, the need for a club to have a representative, an injury -- you name it.As we did last season, lets rank every All-Star, including replacements and the players they replaced, by the relative likelihood that they would have made it to an All Star Game based on their respective amateur and minor league pedigrees. Throughout, I will reference my annual minor league position player and starting pitcher rankings, based on performance and age relative to league/level. Ive been preparing these lists since 1993; they basically serve as master follow lists, with the order tweaked afterward based on traditional scouting methods.The No-BrainersTen of the 17 no-brainers from last years list are bback -- repeats are noted in parentheses -- with 12 new players joining them.dddddddddddd1. Bryce Harper (repeat): Last years No. 1 repeats in that spot. Not much to be said here: When even casual baseball fans know your name not long after your first day of high school, youre the bluest of blue-chippers. Harper blasted through the minors, ranking No. 3 on my minor league position-player list after being drafted first overall at age 17, the definition of a slam dunk All-Star.2. Stephen Strasburg: The Nats sure did pick the right years to get the first overall pick. Strasburg, the first overall selection in 2009, raced through the minors as well, ranking fourth on my minor league pitching rankings in 2010. Harper rates a slight edge, as Strasburg didnt break into the national consciousness until the summer after his freshman college season.3. Kris Bryant (repeat): The second player taken in 2013, Bryant rampaged through the minors, ranking second on my minor league position-player list the following season. Highly regarded but unsignable out of high school, he put on quite a show at a Mariners pre-draft workout in 2010 when I was a member of their front office. ' ' '
