ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Rex Ryan took exception with Colts owner Jim Irsays suggestion that the reason Indianapolis sat out Andrew Luck was because the Buffalo Bills coach doesnt let up in the preseason.Take a look at the tapes and see how many times we blitzed, so, Ryan said, before pausing to collect his thoughts.I can tell you one thing, (Colts coach) Chuck Paganos a good friend of mine, a legitimate good friend of mine. I have way more respect for him than I do others.Ryans comment was clearly directed at Irsay following Buffalos preseason-opening 19-18 loss to the Colts on Saturday night. Two hours before the game, Irsay announced on his Twitter account that the Colts would wait until next week for Luck to make his first preseason start.Irsay followed with a second tweet, by writing: Yes, there is some truth on this dark, rainy night; that my good friend Rex...has never heard of the word....PRESEASON. He closed the comment with a laughing face emoji and three exclamation points.Pagano said it was his decision to sit Luck against Buffalo. And Pagano didnt waver when reminded he was prepared to have Luck play a week earlier against Green Bay in the Hall of Fame game before it was canceled because of an unplayable field. Its one of the benefits that you get when youre the head coach, Pagano said with a smile. You get to decide who plays and who doesnt play.Minus Luck, backups Scott Tolzien and Stephen Morris teamed up to pull out the victory.Tolzien, an offseason free-agent addition, shook off a slow start to produce two scoring drives in the first half. And then Morris, who was signed off Philadelphias practice squad in December, secured the win with a 57-yard touchdown pass to Chester Rogers with 10:42 remaining. The game wasnt without its late dramatics. Bills rookie third-stringer Cardale Jones nearly pulled out a comeback victory in the final seconds.Jones, who led Ohio State to the 2015 national championship, threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jarrett Boykin as time expired. But Jones failed to pull out the win by throwing an incompletion while attempting a 2-point conversion.INJURY UPDATEBills: DE IK Enemkpali was carted off late in the first half with what coach Rex Ryan called a major knee injury. Enemkpali hurt his right knee when his foot caught in the turf and he fell awkwardly while being blocked by Colts lineman Jonotthan Harrison. The Bills are already thin at outside linebacker with rookie first-round pick Shaq Lawson to miss the first month of the season after having shoulder surgery in May. Veteran backup Manny Lawson is expected to miss the entire preseason with a partially torn pectoral muscle.Colts: LB Sio Moore did not return after hurting his hamstring in punt return coverage early in the second quarter. RG Denzelle Good, starting in place of injured starter Hugh Thornton, did not return after hurting his knee and quadriceps in the first half. OT Kevin Graff sustained an ankle injury.ROOKIE WATCHColts: First-round pick, C Ryan Kelly, struggled against the Bills pass rush up the middle. On the Colts second possession, Bills S Corey Graham and LB Preston Brown burst up the middle and forced Tolzien to rush a pass that was nearly intercepted.Bills: Sixth-round pick, DB Kevon Seymour, broke up a 2-point conversion attempt by stripping the ball out of the hands of WR Quan Bray in the right corner of the end zone. On the Colts next possession, Seymour was in perfect position to break up a pass attempt to Tevaun Smith in the end zone.QB COMPARISONColts: Tolzien went 12 of 23 for 140 yards and a TD. Morris went 5 of 9 for 149 yards and a TD.Bills: Starter Tyrod Taylor played one series and finished 2 of 3 for 7 yards. Manuel went 10 of 18 for 91 yards. Jones went 11 of 21 for 162 yards and a TD.FLAG DAYRyans decision to have players run laps for jumping offside in training camp hasnt solved the Bills penalty problems. The Colts first scoring drive was partially set up by consecutive offside penalties. First DE Jerel Worthy jumped on second-and-9, and then Enemkpali jumped. The Bills were flagged 11 times for 106 yards, a season after they were among the NFLs most penalized teams.Weve got to turn the page on that. That was last years team, Ryan said.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFLCheap NBA Jerseys . Marincin has played in two NHL games so far this season with two penalty minutes. LOUIS -- St. SAN DIEGO -- Tony Gwynn will be on everybodys mind during All-Star Game festivities, perhaps no more poignantly than how his death affected American League starter Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox.He actually made a very big impact in my life. I chewed tobacco from 2007 until the day he passed away, Sale said at a news conference Monday. I remember seeing that, and just being so shocked. He was a larger-than-life person. He was an inspiration to the game for many, many people for a lot of different reasons. But I quit that day, and I havent touched it since. In a sense, I owe him a huge thank you for not only myself but for my family and, you know, hopefully I can maybe sway somebody in the right direction as well like he did for me.Gwynn died of salivary gland cancer on June 16, 2014, at 54.Gwynn was one of the most beloved figures in San Diego sports history, as well as the face of the Padres for two decades. At the time of his death, he was in his 12th season as coach at his alma mater, San Diego State. The All-Star Game will be played Tuesday night at Petco Park. Gwynn had as much to do as anyone with the downtown ballpark being built. He played for the Padres his entire 20-year, Hall of Fame career, retiring after the 2001 season. The ballpark was approved by voters just two weeks after the Padres were swept by the New York Yankees in the 1998 World Series. Gwynn batted .500 in those four games, including hitting a home run off the right-field facade in Yankee Stadium in Game 1 off San Diegan David Wells.Gwynn will always be remembered as the greatest Padres player ever. He never played in Petco Park but there are plenty of reminders of him. Days before Gwynn was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007, the Padres unveiled a larger-than-life bronze statue of Gwynn beyond the outfield. It depicts him in the middle of his sweet left-handed swinng.ddddddddddddOne of the streets outside Petco Park is Tony Gwynn Drive. His No. 19 is one of the teams retired numbers that greets fans as they enter the ballpark.Without giving details, the Padres said Gwynn will be honored during pregame ceremonies Tuesday.Gwynns death stunned baseball.Still, there are many happy memories of the Hall of Famer, who had 3,141 hits, a .338 lifetime average and won eight NL batting titles. Some All-Stars have direct connections to Gwynn.Cole Hamels of the Texas Rangers grew up in San Diego and played at Rancho Bernardo High. Gwynns son, Tony Jr., played at Poway High. Most of my memories of Tony Gwynn are because he lived very close to where I grew up, Hamels said. Being able to see him driving down the street in that Porsche that he had, youd see him go by. Playing against his son, hed go hide out in the outfield to watch his son play because he didnt want to get bothered, and it was kind of cool to know that Tony Gwynn was watching your game, even though he was watching his son. But we always convinced ourselves that Tony Gwynn was there to watch us, too.Stephen Strasburg of the Washington Nationals was an unpolished player at West Hills High in suburban Santee, but blossomed under Gwynn at San Diego State, becoming the first overall pick in the 2009 draft.Strasburg recalled Gwynn as one of the greatest hitters of all time, No. 1, but one of the greatest people of all time, as well. I grew up a huge Tony Gwynn fan being here. Playing for him I got a chance to develop that relationship with him. I learned a lot, how to be not only the best baseball player, to be a real pro, but also to be, hopefully, a good human being.---Follow Bernie Wilson on Twitter at http://twitter.com/berniewilson ' ' '
