SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Trainer Graham Motion predicted that Ring Weekend would run a much-improved race in Mondays Grade 2 Bernard Baruch than he had 16 days earlier in the Fourstardave. And he couldnt have been more right, as Ring Weekend not only won the closing-day co-feature at Saratoga by a neck over Jay Gatsby but also established a course record.Ring Weekend finished sixth and last in the Grade 1 Fourstardave. But Motion noted that his horse had not only become a little rank after getting pinched at the start of the race but also was making his first start in three months and just his second in nearly a year and a half that day.Id be very disappointed if he didnt turn in a much more Ring Weekend kind of performance, Motion said 48 hours in advance of the Bernard Baruch. On Monday, John Velazquez, who guided Ring Weekend to an easy victory in the Grade 3 Saranac here two years ago, placed Ring Weekend in perfect striking position off the pace, set for much of the way by Take the Stand. Ring Weekend eased out to launch his bid in early stretch and outfinished Jay Gatsby, with the pair bumping briefly nearing the wire.Jay Gatsby improved his position along the inside on the second turn, eased out between horses to continue his bid near midstretch, was put in tight quarters and jostled when Take the Stand came out slightly under left-handed pressure approaching the wire, and could not quite match strides with Ring Weekend at the end. Take the Stand succumbed very grudgingly, finishing just a nose farther back in third.Following a stewards inquiry and claim of foul by Jay Gatsbys jockey, Javier Castellano, against the winner, the result stood as is.The victory was the sixth in 17 starts for Ring Weekend, who became a Grade 1 winner at Santa Anita during the winter of 2015 before going to the sidelines for better than 14 months due to foot issues. His final time of 1:38.29 for 1-1/16 miles eclipsed the previous track mark of 1:38.54 set by Ironicus in winning the 2015 Bernard Baruch. Ring Weekend paid $7.90 as the slight favorite in a field of nine older turf specialists.Motion watched the race from the Forest Hills neighborhood in Queens, where he was attending the U.S. Open tennis matches.Serena [Williams] won her match just as [Ring Weekend] crossed the finish line, so the timing was a little awkward, Motion quipped when reached by phone several minutes after the race. In fairness to the horse, last time he got really aggressive after getting cut off at the break. This was the real Ring Weekend we saw today. Hes had an incredibly tough year, so I am very proud of him. You never expect any horse to set a track record, but I know what hes capable of, so Im not totally surprised.Motion said he has no definite plans for Ring Weekend other than to point him for the Breeders Cup Mile.I might just want to wrap him up in cotton balls and wait for the Breeders Cup, Motion said when asked what might be next. Seriously, I imagine he might run again, although I wouldnt mind just sitting on him and waiting for the Breeders Cup, which is our major goal. David Wright Mets Jersey . BOSTON -- Back-to-back losses to Louisville and Florida State left Boston College struggling for wins and in danger of finishing last in the Atlantic Coast Conference for a second straight year.Just one week later, after a 30-0 victory over Connecticut , the Eagles (5-6, 1-6 ACC) are suddenly on the verge of a bowl berth and talking about a program on the rise. The vibe is outstanding, and nothing is going to kill that vibe right now, coach Steve Addazio said Monday as he looked ahead to this weekends game against Wake Forest. To go win this game and get to a bowl game buys us more time, buys us continued momentum. But nothing is going to stop that from growing right now. Theyve seen that and tasted that. Now they know it.Boston College won just three games last season -- only one against an FBS opponent, and none in the ACC. The Eagles won three of their first five games this year -- beating Wagner, Massachusetts and Buffalo -- but continued to struggle in the conference.Despite a 21-14 victory over North Carolina State on Oct. 29 that snapped a 12-game league losing streak, BC lost to Virginia Tech, Clemson, Louisville and Florida State by a combined score of 202-24. So when the Eagles walked away from Saturdays game with a fifth victory and a chance to play in the postseason, it was more than just another win. With a win over Wake Forest on Saturday, BC would be bowl eligible with a 6-6 record. Its a goal you set in the beginning of the year, AAddazio said.dddddddddddd Its one thats still alive, and its a marker because its a marker for success and then its a marker for growth and development. I think its huge. All college football players, I mean, coaches, everybody, thats what we talk about: Get to a bowl; get to a bowl.Even with a loss, the Eagles could reach the postseason. There are 18 teams still playing for bowl eligibility, with 16 spots available. If fewer than 16 of the five-win teams come up with a sixth this weekend, schools that finish 5-7 will be picked for the remaining bowl berths based on their Academic Progress Rate.BC is fourth among the 18 in APR, behind Northwestern, Vanderbilt and North Texas. In other words, the Eagles have a good chance.Getting back to a bowl game, it would mean a lot to the program, to elevate the program to where it needs to be, linebacker John Johnson said this weekend.Another advantage of reaching a bowl would be the extra weeks of practice that are allowed for teams that are still playing, Addazio said. With his young team, it would be a huge boost to get ready for next year. There is a lot of young football here to mature, he said. Weve got to go fight to buy those weeks. ... Those weeks mean a lot to every single program. Every head coach will tell that you.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
