WASHINGTON -- On a day that had already featured a pair of marathon games elsewhere in baseball and a doubleheader the next day, the Minnesota Twins and Washington Nationals needed to end extra innings in a hurry. Ryan Doumit made sure they did. Doumit singled in the go-ahead run, Joe Mauer homered, doubled and singled, and the Minnesota Twins defeated the Washington Nationals 4-3 in 11 innings Saturday. "With a split doubleheader tomorrow, the last thing we need on both sides was to go deep into extra innings," Doumit said. "I was fortunate that I got a pitch to hit there in the 11th and put a good swing on it." Josh Roenicke (2-1) pitched a scoreless 10th inning for the win and Glen Perkins retired Washington in the 11th for his 13th save. "We executed some, missed on a couple opportunities, but you keep getting yourself those opportunities, somebodys going to get the big hit," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Today it was Doumit." The Twins, who were playing their first game in Washington since 1971, have won eight of 11. Pinch hitter Chris Hermann drew a walk off Craig Stammen (3-2) to open the 11th. Jamey Carroll bunted him to second and Mauer was intentionally walked. Doumit then hit a soft line drive to short centre, scoring Hermann. "Its a nice little cherry on top. I think anybody that kind of follows the game and has a good idea, you knew that that was going to happen," Doumit said of getting the hit after the walk to Mauer. "You knew that once Jamey bunted and Joes a career .395 hitter or whatever he is." Doumit has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games, batting .319 (15 for 47) with three doubles, five home runs and 16 runs batted in. "Hes been swinging the bat really good and we had some opportunities," Gardenhire said. Jayson Werth homered and former Twin Denard Span added three hits for Washington, which has lost two straight and six of eight. Theyve scored three runs or less in seven straight games. "Its very frustrating," Washington manager Davey Johnson said. "Its getting my dander up. Were better than this." The Nationals collected 10 hits, but went just 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position. "We got some hits, but didnt string them together," said Adam LaRoche. "We need to start getting three and four in an inning, pushing some guys across." Trailing 3-2, the Nationals tied it against Twins starter Kevin Correia in the seventh. Anthony Rendon led off with a single and was bunted to second. Kurt Suzuki hit a high bouncer that shortstop Pedro Florimon charged, but he was unable to come up with it and Rendon scored while Suzuki raced to second with a double as the ball rolled into left field. "Whether he looked off of it or whatever, he just missed the ball. Hes got to at least the put the glove on it," Gardenhire said. Correia pitched 6 1-3 innings in his best start in over a month, allowing three earned runs on eight hits. He struck out a season-high seven and didnt walk a batter. Mauer broke a 2-2 tie when he hit a solo homer off Washington starter Gio Gonzalez with one out in the fifth. Gonzalez gave up three runs, two earned, on five hits in six innings. He walked four and struck out seven. Hes winless in his last six starts despite allowing more than two earned runs only once during that stretch. The Nationals broke on top in the third. Span singled with two outs and Werth lined a 1-2 pitch from Correia over the wall for his fifth home run. Minnesota came back with two in the fourth. After Josh Willingham singled off Ryan Zimmermans glove, Justin Morneau hit a smash toward first that got by LaRoche. Willingham scored from first as the ball rolled to the right-field corner. ""I didnt make the play. I gave them that one, cost us the game," LaRoche said. "So that ones on me." Morneau ended up on second on the error and, after Aaron Hicks walked, scored when Brian Dozier singled past a diving Zimmerman. WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Tommy Tuberville was a 3-year-old the last time Cincinnati won a road game against a Big Ten Conference opponent, defeating Indiana in 1957 in Bloomington.Tuberville, who will celebrate his 62nd birthday on Sept. 18, got an early present Saturday when the Bearcats dominated Purdue, 38-20 in Ross-Ade Stadium.Quarterback Hayden Moore passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more, and linebacker Mike Tyson intercepted Purdues David Blough three times, laying the foundation for a relatively easy victory. With five turnovers, youre going to win most of your games, Tuberville said. I dont care if you are playing on the moon. That was a good game for us. I thought we handled it well.Purdue (1-1) was trying to start the season 2-0 for the first time since 2007, but Blough was intercepted five times, and J.D. Dellinger missed a 28-yard field goal. Three interceptions of Blough set up Cincinnati touchdowns.I was just doing my job, Tyson said of his three interceptions. If it wasnt for our defensive front playing so well, I wouldnt have gotten any interceptions.Blough threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Domonique Young and a 36-yarder to DeAngelo Yancey, and Richie Worship ran 4 yards for another Purdue score. Blough passed for 401 yards. The Bearcats ability to successfully convert on third down was at the core of their offensive dominance. Cincinnati converted 12 of its first 14 third-down situations.Moore threw touchdown passes of 5 and 28 yards to Nate Cole and 20 yards to D.J. Dowdy and ran 9 and 23 yards for scores. His 23-yard TD run with 2:19 iced the outcome. We got a little conservative in the fourth quarter, but it was a big win for us, Tuberville said.Moore completed 19 of 32 passes for 250 yards and ran eight times for 58 yards.Cincinnati drove 85, 80, 75, 32 and 49 yards for touchdowns and had another 13-play, 79-yard drive that produced a 26-yard Andrew Gantz field goal in the third quarter that extended the lead to 24-7.Safety Tyrell Gilberts fourth-quarter interception of Blough set up the 28-yard touchdown pass to Cole, pushing the Ciincinnati lead to 31-7 with 14:10 to play.ddddddddddddWhen you cant get off the field on third down, and then you have too many turnovers, youre not going to win, said Purdue coach Darrell Hazell, now 7-31 in his fourth season with the Boilermakers with four victories against FCS opponents.TAKEAWAYS:CINCINNATI: Tyson intercepted Blough three times, once in the end zone, and Gilbert made a key pick to set up a score, allowing the Bearcats to win the turnover battle. In its season-opening victory against Tennessee-Martin, Cincinnati turned the ball over three times. Coupled with Moores solid day, the Bearcats won each side of the ball.PURDUE: The Boilermakers defense allowed 7.6 yards each time Cincinnati snapped the ball in the first half, when the Bearcats were 9 of 11 on third-down conversions. Coupled with the five interceptions of Blough, Purdue mistakes denied the Boilermakers a chance of rallying from what was once a 24-point deficit.KEY NUMBERSBloughs five interceptions are the most by a Purdue quarterback since Ohio State intercepted Scott Hoffman five times in the Buckeyes 1990 victory against the Boilermakers. Former Super Bowl winning quarterback Bob Griese was intercepted five times by Illinois in a 1966 game that Purdue actually rallied to win, 25-21.INJURIESPURDUE: The Boilermakers played without three starters -- defensive end Austin Larkin (ankle), cornerback DaWan Hunte (ankle) and linebacker Jimmy Herman (hamstring) and then lost starting running back Markell Jones in the third quarter with a sprained shoulder.UP NEXT:CINCINNATI: The Bearcats return home to play No. 6 Houston on Thursday night, hoping to improve to 3-0 and spring a major upset. We were not looking ahead to Houston, but its hard not to because we hear so much about them, Bearcats running back Tion Green said.PURDUE: The Boilermakers have a bye on Sept. 17 and will play Nevada on Sept. 24 in West Lafayette. It will be the first meeting between the schools. ' ' '
