FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Darrelle Revis might be the hottest man in the NFL -- literally. The New York Jets star cornerback routinely practices in a dark sweatshirt -- one of at least three layers -- and sweatpants, no matter the weather. Even when the heat index has temperatures soaring over 100 degrees, as they were this weekend, and the air is so thick you can hardly breathe.I know, people think Im crazy, Revis said after a steamy practice Sunday. Everybody does. While sweat-drenched fans gathered in the metal bleachers are hoping for the occasional warm breeze to provide a respite from the blazing heat, theres Revis on the practice field dressed as if its mid-November.Its just putting myself in the worst-case scenario, in terms of the heat, making it the worst possible, he said. If Im able to overcome this, I think in a game, it would be fairly easy or at least a little bit easier for me.The 5-foot-11, 198-pound Revis estimates he loses 6 or 7 pounds in water weight through a typical practice. Hell start the morning by chugging bottles of water and then again right before practice starts.Coach Todd Bowles prefers to have his players work during the hottest part of the day, calling it the dog days of training camp. Revis takes advantage of the extreme heat to quickly get himself in regular-season shape.During practice, you feel it, but when youre done, thats when you really pay attention to your shirt just being drenched, he said. I mean, its completely soaked. Its like you jumped in the hot tub or a swimming pool or something and youre like, `Holy cow.Obviously, the results I think are good because by the end of practice youre like, `OK, I did something today because youre so drenched.Whos to argue with a seven-time Pro Bowl pick and five-time first-team All-Pro selection who has been considered one of the greatest to play his position?Well, other than some teammates who are downright dumbfounded by all the layers. Some players, such as fellow cornerbacks Dexter McDougle and Dee Milliner, might wear long sleeves or long pants, but none have both like Revis.Ryan Clady said something to me yesterday like, `Youre a savage for wearing all that stuff, Revis said, laughing. The coaches even look at me crazy. Everyones like: `You have too much gear on! What are you doing? You look old, man!On Saturday, Revis had the whole getup going -- sweatshirt, short-sleeved pullover jacket and sweatpants -- while temperatures hit the low-100s. In similar conditions Sunday, he ditched the sweatpants for compression stockings under his shorts but still had a couple of toasty layers under his jersey. The only reason I didnt wear the sweatpants today was because yesterday as I sweated, the sweatpants were just so soaked that they were starting to become heavy, he said. I was out there trying to cover guys and my pants were actually sagging off my butt because they were so heavy from sweat. Some of his teammates razzed him, pointing out that they might not have ever seen him wearing shorts.Revis said Jets head athletic trainer John Mellody constantly monitors players weights, so hes not afraid hes losing too many pounds too quickly. Staying hydrated is the key to avoiding cramps -- or worse. Despite sweating his way through practices his entire NFL career, Revis has never needed to leave the field to get intravenous fluids.Trust me, its definitely hot, he said. But, at the same time, if I can concentrate under those kinds of circumstances, I would think it would be fairly easy come Sundays.Revis has always been regarded by teammates and coaches as perhaps the most competitive player theyve ever seen in a practice, let alone a game. He strives for perfection on the field and cant stand getting beat. Both he and the similarly competitive Brandon Marshall got into it last week when they butted heads during a few plays.Preparation is the key, Revis insists, to achieving what he has on the field. As a high school football star growing up in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, Revis often worked out with Patriots cornerback Ty Law -- and what the youngster saw left an impression.Ty would want to run like 4 miles down the street and you would sit there and think hes nuts because he would have a sweat jacket on, a long-sleeved shirt and sweatpants, Revis said. I would look at him, like: `Dude, arent you hot? You might pass out.Sure enough, once Revis came to New York as the 14th overall draft pick in 2007, he adopted a similar approach. You want to talk about fashion on the football field, thats kind of my fashion look out there, he said, laughing. MIAMI -- When Giancarlo Stanton reached the dugout after hitting a majestic go-ahead homer Saturday night, Jose Fernandez greeted him with a grin and a flurry of punches to the chest, one slugger pounding on another.Stanton homered and had his first four-hit game since 2012, driving in three runs to give Fernandez all the support he needed, and the Miami Marlins beat the New York Mets 7-2.Miami rocked Jacob deGrom (6-5), who allowed 10 hits and five runs, both season highs, and lasted just 3 2/3 innings in his shortest outing since August. The longest hit was by Home Run Derby winner Stanton, who put Miami ahead to stay in the third inning when he pulled a two-run homer off the left-field scoreboard above the 401-foot sign. For that he earned a giddy greeting from Fernandez.I wanted to punch him hard. I was afraid I was going to hurt my hand, though, Fernandez said. Every time he comes to bat, you dont know if hes going to hit it 10,000 feet.Stanton added an RBI single in the fourth and singled in the first and sixth, hiking his average to .241 after a prolonged slump. It was a weird vibe in the first couple of innings, Stanton said. It was kind of back and forth, and who was going to make the bigger punch was going to win the game. Luckily it was us.Fernandez (12-4) gave up two early runs but went seven innings to match his career high for victories, achieved in his 2013 rookie season. He also had two hits, raising his average to .265, and drove in the first run.Even when I was at the plate, I was ready to do whatever it takes to win this game, Fernandez said. Nothing unusual there -- he improved to 26-1 with a 1.47 ERA in 37 starts at Marlins Park.DeGrom was coming off the first complete game of his career, a one-hit shutout in his last start, but his anticipated pitchers duel with Fernandez failed to materialize. The right-hander allowed at least two baserunners in every inning he worked, and his ERA rose to 2.73.I wasnt very good, deGrom said. Seemingly everything I threw went down the middle, and I paid for it.DeGroms best moment came at the plate, where he doubled to lead off the third, his ffirst extra-base hit since July 2015.dddddddddddd. He scored on a single by Yoenis Cespedes, and James Loneys sacrifice fly gave the Mets a 2-1 lead. But that was all they managed against Fernandez. He hit 99 mph in the first inning, and his final pitch was a 98-mph fastball to Cespedes for strike three.Christian Yelich led off the Miami third with a single, and Stanton dented the scoreboard with a homer that landed between the words BALLS and STRIKES.That was one of those pretty ones, manager Don Mattingly said.I didnt break any lights, Stanton said, so that was good. The homer was Stantons first since he won the Home Run Derby, and his 21st this year. He has six homers in 10 games against the Mets this season, including three this month off deGrom.Yelich had three of the Marlins 16 hits, and Martin Prado drove in two runs.Guys did a really good job with deGrom, battling him and making him throw a bunch of pitches, Mattingly said. Weve been good with those type of guys. Its the soft-tossing guys weve had a lot of trouble with.SUZUKI UPDATEMiamis Ichiro Suzuki grounded out as a pinch hitter to end the eighth and remained four hits shy of 3,000.TRAINERS ROOMMets: 1B Lucas Duda (back) visited the team, took swings for the first time since his injury and said he hopes to be ready for a rehab assignment in a couple of weeks. I feel good. Im progressing on the right track, said Duda, who hasnt faced pitching yet.REHABMarlins: 2B Dee Gordon went 2 for 13 in his first four games with Triple-A New Orleans as he prepares to return next week from an 80-game suspension for a positive drug test. Mattingly said reports regarding Gordons progress have been encouraging. Hes swinging the bat good and looks good for a guy who hasnt played in a while, Mattingly said.UP NEXTRHP Jose Urena (1-1, 6.23) is scheduled to start Sunday for the Marlins in the rubber game of the series against LHP Steven Matz (7-6, 3.56).Weve got to get the series, Stanton said. Tonight wont mean much without that. ' ' '
