CHASKA, Minn. -- To all the hecklers who shouted at him for 33 holes Saturday at the Ryder Cup, Rory McIlroy has just one thing to say.Bring it on.The more they shouted, the better we played, McIlroy said. I hope they shout at us all day tomorrow. The 50,000 or so fans who jammed into Hazeltine National Golf Club sure did so Saturday, heckling McIlroy at every opportunity as he and playing partner Thomas Pieters came up big again for the European team. They won both their matches, and they did it with some flair before huge crowds that cheered them only when they made mistakes. If the noise is really welcome, though, the European team will need all it can get on Sunday when it faces a daunting task of coming back from a three-point deficit to keep the cup they have won the last three times out.Obviously the heckling is there, but as Rory says it just pumps us up, Pieters said.A day that began with much promise for the European team ended on a down note after Lee Westwood missed a short putt on the 18th hole that would have given he and Danny Willett a half point in their match against J.B. Holmes and Ryan Moore. That left the European team down 9 1/2-6 1/2, needing a comeback in singles play along the lines of the 2012 team outside Chicago to retain the cup on Sunday. The deficit was no fault of McIlroy and Pieters, their top pairing on both of the days sessions.McIlroy, who bowed twice to the crowd Friday when he and Pieters closed out their match with an eagle putt on No. 16, teamed with Pieters to take down Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler in the morning and Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka in the afternoon. They did it while making some noise of their own, with McIlroy roaring loudly and pumping his fist every time he or Pieters made a clutch birdie.I feel like I need to take a couple Advil, McIlroy said. I have a sore head listening to all those the last day, day and a half. I feel like Ive been able to focus pretty well and Ive played some of my best golf and the last three matches weve played, its been three points on the board. Id give myself a pretty high mark for that. For the most part the fans were good spirited in their heckling, yelling out Ro-ry! Ro-ry in a mocking way and telling him after he made a bogey on No. 16 that Six is good! One got a little carried away by taunting McIlroy with a sexual reference while he was walking off the seventh green, causing McIlroy to seek out a marshal to try and have him removed. These things happen, McIlroy said. Its golf at the end of the day. You try to keep the utmost respect for who youre playing and for who youre supporting. You know, that particular guy, this is obviously in the very, very small minority, just took it a bit too far.Other Europeans werent as happy with the crowd, with Sergio Garcia saying 15 percent of the fans were saying things they shouldnt and that his American girlfriend was embarrassed. Captain Darren Clarke also said a few went overboard, though it was pretty much expected. Its just The Ryder Cup and people are exuberant and enjoying themselves, Clarke said. Its just part of the whole Ryder Cup thing. Im sure that everybody will do their best to deal with it and people just seemed to enjoy themselves a little bit too much at times.McIlroy and Pieters, though, seemed to thrive on the noise, making six birdies in 16 holes in alternate shot in the morning to beat Fowler and Mickelson. They made nine birdies and an eagle in better ball, including a putt by Pieters on the 17th hole that thwarted a comeback by Johnson and Koepka.Pieters, a Ryder Cup rookie, and McIlroy won all three of their points over two days, and McIlroy suggested a new Ryder Cup pairing had emerged for the matches two years from now in Paris.I think youll see this pairing in Paris, he said. While McIlroy and Pieters were in top form, only one other European pairing won a full point in Saturdays matches. Justin Rose and Chris Wood beat Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson in the morning, but Woods was not in the afternoon lineup and Rose and Henrik Stenson lost their match to Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed.Europe will need to win 7 1/2 of the 12 points available in singles to retain the cup. In Overwatchs brief history, one team has been the clear dominant player in the competitive scene. For anyone familiar with high-level play in Blizzards shiny new first-person shooter, the name of Team EnVyUs earned a reputation for near-invincibility, racking up win after win as spring turned to summer. EnVyUss 57-match winning streak made winning look easy, but what fun is a streak if nobody ever breaks it? And thats just what happened last week.Entering their semifinal match at ESLs Overwatch Atlantic Showdown, EnVyUs was slated the favorite, as usual. Initially forming during Overwatchs closed beta, a group of friends created a team then known as IDDQD, named after a cheat code from the original Doom (sadly, one Im old enough to remember first-hand). Competing in weekly cups against more established esports organizations, IDDQD were the kings of the Overwatch beta and most of that team eventually became part of the new EnVy Overwatch team after an April acquisition. And after June, they never stopped winning.Enter Team Rogue. The Atlantic Showdowns $100,000 pot is the largest yet for an Overwatch tournament, though soon-to-be eclipsed by the Overwatch Opens $300,000 prize pool. With well-established teams at the top and a fairly static map pool in competition, Rogue adopted a strategy of training hard on less popular maps in order to leverage their natural aggressive style and create imbalanced matchups by throwing the competition a curve. And what a curve it was.The biggest curve, I believe that we couldve done and did was throwing the unusual maps towards them, said Kevyn TviQ Lindstr?m to ESPN.com. With their limited practice time leading up to the event, we felt like Assault would be our best shot towards winning as we felt pretty comfortable on it. The payloads in general were really close and couldve gone either way, but we felt like we had the upper hand when we went into the Assault maps. And thats just what happened last week. EnVyUs was just as dangerous as always, but Rogue took their aggressive playstyle right at EnVyUs, winning the first game in the little-played Anubis map, thanks in a large part to the Reinhardt play of Jonathan Reinforce Larsson. Jokingly called Rhine-force, to his occasional chagrin, Reinforces typical take-no-prisoners style of play along with TviQs unconventional choice of using Junkrat for the entire round, gave them the big defensive stand needed to take Anubis over EnVyUss more standard lineup.ddddddddddddIn the end, the match against EnVyUs came down to a showdown in Lijiang, the rubber match taken by Rogue in large part due to the usual heroics from TviQ and and Dylan aKm Bignet. In a game in which the casters attention tend to focus on the offense players, there were other unsung heroes here: Benjamin uNKOE Chevasson and Jean-Louis KnOxXx Boyer both playing aggressively in their support roles, getting enough kills on their own, which disrupted EnVyUs enough to prevent their offensive players, Ronnie Talespin DuPree and Timo Taimou Kettunen from getting much ground to work with. Not to mention the Zarya work of Micha?l winz Bignet, running up kill streaks multiple times while clinging onto single-digit health. With TviQ a member of the original IDDQD team, I asked what it meant to him to be part of the team that ended EnVyUss streak and he told me that he cant deny that it meant quite a bit for [him] to be part of the team ending their streak, especially on LAN.Beating EnVyUs didnt end the weekend for Rogue as they still had to come back after that win to play the final against REUNITED, ranked second in the world at that time by Gosugamers Elo-derived method. After a rough game two for Rogue, when REUNITED took advantage of Rogues aggressiveness and took the point in Dorado, Rogue won two to win the match 3-1, closing it out with an overwhelming final push on Kings Road to take home the $40,000 first-place prize.Whats next for Team Rogue? After a tough loss to FaZe in the winners bracket of the Overwatch Open prelims on Friday that saw them lose on Anubis, one of their bread-and-butter maps, Rogue came back to easily defeat Tornado RoX and punch their ticket to Atlanta. As TviQ told me of course we have to remake the epic matchup we had at Atlantic against EnVyUs, which also qualified for their Regional Finals. However, to get to EnVyUs, theyll first have to beat the rest of the EU qualifiers. And anyone who has ever played king of the hill knows that once youve shoved off your friends and become the new king, youve got a big target on your back. ' ' '
