MILWAUKEE -- After getting shelled in his previous start, Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo decided to do a little damage himself on Saturday night. Gallardo singled, doubled, scored two runs and executed a successful sacrifice bunt off former teammate Shaun Marcum in a key spot to help Milwaukee hold off the New York Mets 7-6. "I just try to put the ball in the play," Gallardo said. "The first base hit didnt feel too good on my hands. I hit it off the end of the bat and I just got a lucky break." Gallardo said the double he laced in the fourth inning wasnt in the location Marcum wanted it. "The slider he threw me was up. He made a mistake," Gallardo said. "I was able to put a good swing on it." Milwaukee scored a key run in the sixth with Gallardo in the thick of things. After Logan Schafer led off with a single, Gallardo executed a two-strike sacrifice bunt. Marcum fielded the ball cleanly but his throw was dropped by second-baseman Daniel Murphy, who was covering first. The ball skipped into right field, allowing Schafer to race around the bases and beat a throw to the plate. "I was just trying to get it down, especially with two strikes," Gallardo said of his bunt. "I saw it hit the ground and I just started running to first. Then I saw the throw was kind of wide of first base." On the mound, Gallardo (7-8), who has been the subject of recent trade speculation, scattered six hits over six innings and allowed four earned runs, striking out six and walking three. In previous outing Monday against Washington, Gallardo gave up nine hits and eight earned runs in three innings. Gallardo gave up one hit through the first four innings Saturday before running into some trouble in the fifth and sixth. "I think he started to get a little tired," said Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy, who homered and drove in two runs. "I think he really threw well the first four innings. His last two he scuffled a little, but for the most part it was a solid start and he gave us a chance to win. Thats most important." Brewers manager Ron Roenicke liked what he saw from Gallardo early in the game. "Yovani started off really well then lost some command," Roenicke said. Francisco Rodriguez recorded his eighth save of the season and 302nd of his career despite giving up a two-out solo home run to Marlon Byrd in the ninth. The Brewers jumped on Marcum (1-10) for a run in the first inning. Lucroys two-out single scored Norichika Aoki, who led off the game with an infield hit. Milwaukee added two runs in the second. Schafer singled, moved to third on Gallardos single and scored on Aokis base hit. Jean Segura followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Gallardo. Lucroy extended the Brewers lead to 4-0 with a one-out, solo home run to left field in the third. "(Marcum) left a lot of balls up, more than he normally does," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "Hes really a change-speed guy that keeps the ball down. The ball to Lucroy he left up. He left a breaking ball out over the plate in the first inning. Thats just not where he usually pitches." Gallardo helped himself again in the fourth, leading off with a double off the right field wall and scoring on Seguras one-out single. The Mets broke through for two runs against Gallardo in the fifth. John Buck led off with a home run off the right field foul pole. Daniel Murphy had a run-scoring double later in the inning. The Mets slashed the Brewers lead to 5-4 on Bucks two-run single in the sixth. New York cut the lead to 6-5 in the seventh on Byrds sacrifice fly. Schafers run-scoring double, his third hit of the game, put Milwaukee ahead 7-5. Byrds home run in the ninth pulled the Mets within a run, but Rodriguez struck out Kirk Nieuwenhuis to end the game. Marcum, who compiled a 20-11 record while pitching for Milwaukee in 2011 and 2012, allowed 11 hits and five earned runs over five innings. He walked one and struck out three. "I fell behind in some counts and this isnt the most pitcher-friendly park to do that in so it makes it rough," Marcum said. "It was nice to come back here. I enjoyed my two years here. Obviously, I wish the results were better." NOTES: The Brewers and Mets each will have two representatives on the NL All-Star team. The Mets David Wright will start at third base after winning fan balloting at the position. Teammate Matt Harvey was named to the squads pitching staff. Brewers OF Carlos Gomez and SS Jean Segura were selected as reserves. ... Brewers OF Ryan Braun took batting practice on the field Saturday after taking swings in a batting cage on Friday. Braun has been sidelined about a month with a thumb injury. ... The Mets Ike Davis stole his first base of the season in the second inning. Soccer Jerseys China . Brett Rypien doesnt receive much national attention since he doesnt play for a power-conference school. That doesnt mean the Boise State sophomore quarterback cant throw the football around the field a little bit.Rypien looks to build on his best performance of the season when the No. 15 Broncos host Colorado State in a Mountain West game Saturday (10:15 p.m ET, ESPN2).Rypien threw a career-best five touchdown passes in last weeks victory over New Mexico despite playing only 2 1/2 quarters. The early hook during the 49-21 conquest prevented him from matching Jim McMillans school record of six against Montana on Nov. 16, 1974.Rypien has thrown 11 scoring passes against three interceptions as Boise State (5-0, 2-0) looks to remain unbeaten when it entertains the Rams (3-3, 1-1).Brett had a heck of a night and he prepared all week just like he does every week, senior receiver Thomas Sperbeck said. I think he did a great job staying in the pocket making those throws. Great player.Rypien completed 21 of 28 passes for 391 yards against the Lobos. His performance -- which earned him Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week honors -- came in the wake of family tragedy for the second time this season. One of Rypiens grandmothers died early last week. Ironically, his other grandmother died the week of the season opener. But he played like a guy without a worry on his mind. Its huge. It helps get your mind off things, Rypien said of being able to play a game. I really learned a lot about life the past couple weeks. Not football.Always thankful to my family members, telling them that I love them every day because you kind of take that stuff for granted.Boise State certainly doesnt take Rypiens prowess lightly as he is providing the program with its best quarterbacking since the schools all-time best player, Kellen Moore, completed his career in 2011.The Broncos are the lone FBS team in the nation not to trail in a game this season. They are also attempting to improve to 6-0 all-time versus the Rams.Colorado State defeated Utah State 31-24 last week but the victory was costly as standout true freshman quarterback Collin Hill suffered a torn ACL in his left knee and is done for the season.Hill was hurt on a 19-yard scramble and coach Mike Bobo said the injury occurred before he was even hit. He passed for 1,096 yards and eight touchdownns against two interceptions despite not becoming the starter until the third game of the season.dddddddddddd.Thats football. Youre going to have injuries, youre going to have setbacks, youre going to have some adversity, Bobo said at a press conference. And he is a well-grounded young man that is going to handle it, I think, extremely well, because hell go back to work and hell be a better player for it.Junior Nick Stevens regains the starting position he lost after a poor Week 1 performance. Stevens had a solid season a year ago when he passed for 2,679 yards and 21 touchdowns against 12 interceptions.By all accounts, Stevens didnt sulk after losing the starting job and he proved it by helping the Rams rally past the Aggies.I think it was definitely tough, Stevens said. I think its easy to get discouraged after something like that happens. It happens all the time around every position so I think it can just be a lesson for football and life to just keep grinding and keep pushing no matter what happens because you never know whats going to happen.Stevens has a solid target to throw to in junior receiver Michael Gallup, who had seven receptions for 140 yards and a touchdown against Utah State. Gallup has 25 catches for 388 yards and three scores on the season. The Colorado State defense is led by senior weak-side linebacker Kevin Davis, who has a team-leading 58 tackles. Davis was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week after recovering a fumble and recording the game-clinching interception against Utah State.Boise States defense is receiving solid play from senior defensive end Sam McCaskill, who leads the squad with 9 1/2 tackles for losses and stands second with five sacks. The Broncos have a trio of solid offensive playmakers to support Rypien. Junior running back Jeremy McNichols has scored 12 touchdowns (nine rushing, three receiving) while rushing for a team-leading 558 yards while Sperbeck and junior wideout Cedrick Wilson each caught nine passes against New Mexico.Sperbeck has 33 receptions for 629 yards this season to raise his career-yardage total to 2,958. He ranks third in Boise State history behind Titus Young (3,063 from 2007-10) and Matt Miller (3,049 from 2011-14). ' ' '
