COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolinas quarterback situation remains unsettled after two games.Senior Perry Orth started the Gamecocks first two contests at Vanderbilt and Mississippi State. However, after trailing the Bulldogs 24-0 at the half, freshman Brandon McIlwain who took over in the second half and rallied the Gamecocks to two touchdowns in a 27-14 loss.Look for McIlwain to get even more playing time when South Carolina opens its home season against fired-up East Carolina, fresh off a victory over North Carolina State last week.Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said his offensive staff has a pretty good idea wholl start against the Pirates, but like before the Vanderbilt game, will keep things under wraps until game time. Both are repping at the position, Muschamp said Tuesday.Theres no divide on the team about the quarterbacks, tailback A.J. Turner said, although each brings a different skillset to the position. The second half we played with a faster tempo and I feel like we do better when we play faster, Turner said. I think thats what Brandon McIlwain brings to the table.McIlwain was a highly regarded high-school passer who had offers to play from Auburn, Florida, Tennessee and UCLA among others. He was also a prized baseball prospect, who was tracking to be a high-round pick in the Major League Baseball draft last June before deciding to sign with the Gamecocks.Muschamp and quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper spent all spring and summer trying to whittle down a wide-open quarterback race. Orth had the experience after starting eight games last year while McIlwain and fellow freshman Jake Bentley are clearly South Carolinas future at the position.Orths experience won out early and he rallied South Carolina from 10-0 down at Vanderbilt in Week 1 for a 13-10 victory. Orth was less effective at Mississippi State, going 9 of 17 for 83 yards and an interception in the first two quarters as the Gamecocks fell behind 24-0.Orth got little help, however, from South Carolinas offensive line or its running backs. Orth was sacked twice and the Gamecocks finished 34 yards on the ground.Muschamp said the more playing time McIlwain receives, the quicker hell adjust to the college game. The game will continue to slow down for these guys and theyll improve, Muschamp said.Turner, also a freshman, sounded like he had a preference at quarterback. Turner said McIlwain brings a greater sense of urgency on offense, something he believes can only help improve the unit. Hes not turning against Orth, who he believes is a talented leader instrumental to the Gamecocks lone victory so far.East Carolina coach Scottie Montgomery is prepping for Orths throwing and McIlwains ability to cause chaos to defenses with his dual-threat nature. All in all, it presents a tough challenge, Montgomery said.Even for South Carolina. Muschamp has several times if he had a player separate himself from the others at quarterback, that would be his starter. So far, that hasnt happened.Part of the problem is the opening half where the Gamecocks have zero points through two games.South Carolina offensive lineman Mason Zandi does not understand the slow starts -- or why the offense heats up after that.I cant pinpoint what worked for us in the second half, Zandi said. We just went to locker room, made some adjustments and moved on.Muschamp said the slow starts are on the coaches, who havent put players in position to excel early on. Felt like it was our execution, he said. The first-year coach hopes the right quarterback will get things going a bit faster on Saturday.---AP College Football website: www.collegefootball.ap.orgNike Air Vapormax Canada . OAKLAND, Calif. -- Even before the video review, Eduardo Rodriguez realized speedy Marcus Semien was safe at first base.Rodriguezs no-hit bid for the Boston Red Sox was broken up after a replay reversal with two outs in the eighth inning, and Khris Davis hit a game-ending double in the ninth that sent the Oakland Athletics to a 1-0 victory Sunday.Retiring Red Sox slugger David Ortiz offered Rodriguez a hug after he came off the field and these words: You did the best job you could do -- buen trabajo in Spanish, Rodriguez recalled.Trying to complete Bostons first no-hitter in eight years, Rodriguez stuck out his right leg to knock down Semiens grounder in the eighth. The left-hander had to search for the ball in the dirt on the mound before scooping it up and making a quick throw to first.Semien initially was ruled out by umpire Laz Diaz. As manager Bob Melvin challenged the call, which was overturned after a brief review that lasted approximately 19 seconds.Replays clearly showed Semien was safe, just as Rodriguez knew they would. And the infield single ended his run at a no-hitter in frustrating fashion.Youve got to ask everybody whos lost a no-hitter how it feels, said Rodriguez, who came the closest he ever has to throwing a no-no.Rodriguez got the final out of the eighth, keeping the game scoreless. After that, his day was done.He was outstanding and unfortunately he gets a ball off his shoe that he cant seemingly find, and thats the end of a potentially history-making day here, Red Sox manager John Farrell said.In the ninth, Brock Holt misplayed Davis double in deep left field for an error that allowed Danny Valencia to score from first base.Valencia drew a leadoff walk against Craig Kimbrel (2-4), and the As averted a three-game sweep.Oakland snapped a five-game losing streak overall, and a nine-game skid to Boston.Ryan Madson (5-4) pitched the ninth for the win.Oakland has not been held without a hit since four Orioles pitchers turned the trick on July 13, 1991 -- the longest active streak in the majors.Boston right-hander Rick Porcello carried a bid for a perfect game into the sixth inning of an 11-2 victory Saturday. Jake Smolinski broke that one up with a double.Jon Lester tossed the most recent no-hitter for the Red Sox on May 19, 2008, against Kansas City.Ortiz received a standing ovation before his initial at-bat, when he struck out swinging to end the first. He went 0 for 2 with two strikeouts and two walks after goingg 5 for 6 with five RBI in the first two games of the series.ddddddddddddItd be nice if he took a day off, Melvin joked before the game. Hes performing as well as he ever has.For the upcoming interleague series at San Diego, Big Papi will be available to pinch hit but Farrell has no plans to use him on defense. After Boston outscored Oakland 27-4 over the previous two games, neither team could capitalize Sunday until the very end.The Red Sox had scored at least 11 runs in all five previous meetings this season.Oaklands first win in six tries against the Red Sox meant the As avoided going winless for the fourth time against an AL team in one season. They went 0-11 against Baltimore in 1978, 0-7 versus Cleveland in 1995 and 0-6 when facing the Indians in 1994.As starter Kendall Graveman struck out seven in 6 1/3 sharp innings. You know theyre going to put some good swings on you and today a couple of balls were hit hard right at people, and that helped us, he said.Dustin Pedroia has an 11-game hitting streak and has hit in 20 straight against the As.MONCADAS FIRSTSCuban star Yoan Moncada made his major league debut Friday, got his first hit and RBI with a run-scoring double Saturday, then was picked off and committed an error at third base Sunday. His glove came through when it mattered behind Rodriguez: Moncada snagged Billy Butlers hard liner to start the seventh.TRAINERS ROOMRed Sox: Rookie OF Andrew Benintendi (left knee sprain) played catch for the first time and has taken some dry swings. ...
