SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. -- Cam Maclise scored a hat trick as the Brooks Bandits opened the RBC Cup with a 7-1 win over the Truro Bearcats on Saturday. Maclises goals came during a five-goal outburst by the Bandits in the second period at the junior A championship. The seven goals were the most scored by a team in its debut RBC Cup game since the Chilliwack Chiefs scored seven in 2000. Dakota Mason, Anthony Paskaruk, Tanner Hicks and Nick Newman had the other goals for Brooks. Maclise, who led the Bandits in scoring in the regular season and playoffs, scored 22 seconds apart on both ends of a 5-on-3 power play early in the second period before completing his hat trick nine minutes later. He also added an assist. Jordan Coccimiglio scored the lone goal for Truro, spoiling Michael Fredricks shutout bid on a power play nine minutes into the third period. After the Bearcats carried the play in the games early minutes, hitting two posts and getting three power-play opportunities in the first 10 minutes, Brooks opened the scoring when Mason walked around a Truro defender and beat Shayne Campbell through the five-hole. Paskaruk doubled the lead four minutes later, driving the net and tipping home a pass from Anthony Petruzzelli for a 2-0 lead. The floodgates opened in the second, with Hicks making it 3-0 just 26 seconds into the period before Maclise scored a pair in quick succession. Nick Newman pushed the lead to 6-0 at 5:17, ending Campbells day. Maclise capped the Bandits scoring with his third goal, the lone shot to beat Jacob Fancy. Coccimiglio tucked in the rebound on a Bearcats man advantage at 8:52 of the third period, the lone bright spot for the East Region champions. Campbell and Fancy combined to make 20 saves in the Truro goal, while Fredrick turned aside 17 of 18 to record the win for Brooks. The Badgers have lost five of their last eight vs. the SEC, but only one of those losses was by more than 10 points -- last years 18-point loss to eventual national champion Alabama. Included in that stretch is a four-point loss to LSU in the 2014 season opener, which happened to be Leonard Fournettes first game.I think Wisconsins front seven could have some success in slowing down Fournette, but inexperience in the secondary could mean QB Brandon Harris is set for a big day. It will be close for a while, but I expect the Tigers to ultimately pull away and wear downn the Badgers late.ddddddddddddATS pick: LSU 33, Wisconsin 17 (Confidence 6/10)Coughlin: There is a trend when you look at some of these matchups of the great first weekend of college football we have. The trend is that some coaches have left the school they coached at last season and are now facing that school in Week 1. Example No. 1 is new LSU defensive coordinator, Dave Aranda, who called the defensive signals last year for the Badgers. Is this a major advantage for the Tigers? When you look at the talent the LSU defense has, I believe this is a bigger than normal advantage, resulting in the Tigers getting some turnovers.Another factor when you look at this game is the expectations of LSU coming into this season, especially because of the way last season ended. As much as people want to talk about Fournette, the season still hangs on the play of quarterback Harris. He has wide receivers who have potential to be first round picks in Malachi Dupre and Travin Dural, so if he can take care of the football and get those guys some targets and mix in a little -- or a lot -- of Fournette, I dont think the Badgers can stop them. Therefore, I like a lot of points to be scored in this game. Take the over.Pick: LSU 31, Wisconsin 17 (over the total of 44.5 points) ' ' '
